If you've invested in a Belstaff waxed jacket, whether it's the iconic Trialmaster, the rugged Roadmaster, or any of their renowned waxed cotton pieces, you've acquired more than just outerwear. You've got a piece of motorcycling heritage that's designed to last decades with proper care.

At Ragazzi, we stock a curated selection of Belstaff's finest waxed jackets, and we're often asked about maintenance.

The good news is that keeping your waxed cotton jacket in peak condition is straightforward when you know what you're doing.

Even better news? We now stock both the Belstaff Wax Dressing and the Belstaff Wax Kit, so you can maintain your investment piece at home.

Why Waxed Cotton Needs Special Care

Belstaff's waxed cotton is treated with a specialised wax coating that makes it wind and water-resistant whilst remaining breathable, a combination that's made these jackets legendary among motorcyclists and style enthusiasts alike. This wax coating is what gives the fabric its distinctive finish and protective qualities, but it does wear away over time with use and exposure to the elements.

Regular rewaxing isn't just about aesthetics (though that beautiful, rich patina is certainly part of the appeal). It's about maintaining the functional properties that make these jackets so special. Without proper maintenance, your jacket will gradually lose its weather resistance, and the fabric can become vulnerable to moisture damage.

Belstaff recommends rewaxing once a year if the jacket is worn regularly. However, if you notice water soaking into the fabric rather than beading on the surface, or if high-wear areas like shoulders and elbows look dry or faded, it's time to rewax.

When to Clean vs When to Rewax

Before you reach for the wax, it's important to understand when your jacket needs cleaning versus when it needs rewaxing. A dirty jacket should always be cleaned before rewaxing. Applying wax over dirt will seal in grime and prevent proper absorption into the fabric.

Clean your jacket when:

  • Surface dust or dirt is visible
  • There are stains or marks on the fabric
  • The jacket has been stored for an extended period
  • You're preparing to rewax (always clean first)

Rewax your jacket when:

  • Water no longer beads on the surface
  • The fabric looks dry or faded, especially at wear points
  • It's been approximately 12 months since the last waxing (for regularly worn jackets)
  • You've just cleaned the jacket and it's completely dry

How to Clean Your Belstaff Waxed Jacket

Cleaning waxed cotton requires a gentle approach. Never machine wash, dry clean, or use harsh detergents. These will strip away the protective wax coating and can permanently damage the fabric.

What You'll Need:

  • Soft-bristle brush
  • Clean, lint-free cloth or natural sponge
  • Lukewarm water
  • Well-ventilated drying area

The Cleaning Process:

  1. Initial brush down: Use a dry, soft-bristle brush to remove any loose dust and dirt from the surface. Pay particular attention to seams, pockets, and high-wear areas where debris accumulates.
  2. Assess the jacket: Once the loose dirt is removed, examine the jacket carefully. Check for any repairs needed and identify areas with stubborn stains or ingrained dirt.
  3. Spot clean problem areas: For stains or ingrained dirt, dampen your lint-free cloth or sponge with lukewarm water. No soap or detergent. Gently wipe the soiled area using light, circular motions. Don't scrub aggressively as this can damage the wax coating.
  4. Dry thoroughly: Hang the jacket in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and heat sources. This is crucial. Never force-dry with heaters, radiators, or hairdryers at this stage. Allow at least 24 hours for the jacket to dry completely before moving on to rewaxing.
  5. When professional help is needed: If your jacket requires deep cleaning or has damage beyond simple spot cleaning, contact a professional. Belstaff offers specialist cleaning services through their repair portal, or you can enquire with us at Ragazzi for recommendations.

How to Rewax Your Belstaff Jacket at Home

This is where your investment in proper care products pays off. We stock both the Belstaff Wax Dressing (200ml tin, £30) and the complete Belstaff Wax Kit (£40), which includes everything you need for the job.

What You'll Need:

  • Belstaff Wax Dressing (or Wax Kit)
  • Warm water (for melting the wax)
  • Dry sponge or lint-free cloth
  • Hairdryer
  • Clean, flat working surface
  • Well-ventilated area
  • Protective covering for your work surface

The Rewaxing Process:

Step 1: Prepare the wax Place the unopened tin of Belstaff Wax Dressing in a bowl of warm water. You're not trying to boil it—just gently warm it until the wax becomes translucent and spreadable. This usually takes 10-15 minutes. Don't overheat the wax or place it directly on a heat source.

Step 2: Set up your workspace Lay your jacket front-down on a clean, flat surface protected with old sheets or newspaper. Make sure you're working in a well-ventilated area—open windows or work outdoors if possible.

Step 3: Apply the wax Using a dry sponge or lint-free cloth, apply the wax in long, even strokes working from bottom to top. This application direction helps prevent the wax from pooling at the hem. Don't glob it on—you want a thin, even coating. The fabric should darken as you apply the wax.

Work section by section, ensuring complete coverage. Pay extra attention to seams, shoulder areas, elbows, and other high-wear points where water is most likely to penetrate. Massage the wax into these areas thoroughly—they need additional protection.

Step 4: Work on the front Once the back is complete, flip the jacket over and repeat the process on the front. Again, use long strokes and ensure even coverage across all areas including around buttons, pockets, and the collar.

Step 5: Heat activation This is the step that makes the difference between a well-waxed jacket and a patchy one. Using a hairdryer on a medium heat setting (not hot), gently warm the waxed surface. Hold the dryer about 20-30cm from the fabric and move it continuously. You'll see the wax being absorbed into the fabric—it will appear to melt into the cotton and the surface will look more uniform.

This step redistributes the wax evenly and ensures it penetrates deep into the weave rather than sitting on the surface. Work methodically across the entire jacket, front and back.

Step 6: Final drying Hang the jacket in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Leave it to cure for at least 24 hours before wearing. During this time, the wax continues to settle into the fabric fibres.

Step 7: Quality check After 24 hours, inspect your work. The jacket should have an even, slightly matte finish with no dry patches. Run your hand over the surface—it should feel smooth and slightly waxy to the touch. If you find any missed spots, you can apply a small amount of additional wax to those areas and heat with the hairdryer.

Critical Don'ts for Waxed Cotton Care

Belstaff is very clear about what damages waxed cotton. Avoid these at all costs:

  • Never dry clean - The solvents will strip all the wax
  • Never machine wash - Agitation and detergents destroy the coating
  • Never tumble dry - Heat and movement damage the fabric structure
  • Never use soap, detergent, bleach, or solvents - These dissolve the protective wax
  • Never iron or starch - Direct heat and starch chemicals harm waxed cotton
  • Never force-dry near radiators, fires, or direct heat - Can cause uneven wax distribution and fabric damage
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight - UV rays can degrade both the wax and the cotton

Storage Tips for Waxed Jackets

Proper storage extends the life of your jacket significantly:

  • Always store hanging - Never fold waxed cotton as this can crack the wax coating and create permanent creases
  • Use a sturdy hanger - Waxed jackets are heavy; use a substantial wooden or padded hanger to maintain the shoulder shape
  • Choose a cool, dry, well-ventilated space - Avoid damp areas, attics, or cellars where temperature and humidity fluctuate
  • Clean before storing - Remove any dirt before long-term storage to prevent it setting into the fabric
  • Ensure complete dryness - Never store a damp jacket as this encourages mildew growth
  • Mind your furnishings - Freshly waxed jackets can transfer wax to pale leather car seats and furniture. After waxing, avoid contact with such surfaces for a few weeks until the wax has fully cured

Why These Products are Worth Having

If you own a Belstaff waxed jacket, keeping a tin of wax dressing or the complete kit on hand is sensible maintenance planning. Here's why:

Cost-effectiveness: Professional rewaxing services typically cost £50-80. With the Belstaff Wax Dressing at £30 or the complete kit at £40, you can rewax your jacket multiple times for less than a single professional service.

Convenience: You can rewax on your schedule, during the off-season, without posting your jacket away for weeks.

Quality assurance: You're using the exact same product Belstaff themselves recommend, not a generic substitute that might not be formulated for their specific wax blend.

Pride of ownership: There's something satisfying about maintaining your own quality garments. You'll understand the craftsmanship better and develop a deeper appreciation for how these jackets are made to last.

Immediate response: If you get caught in unexpected heavy rain and notice your jacket's protection has diminished, you can address it straight away rather than waiting for a professional service appointment.

The Long-Term Value Proposition

A well-maintained Belstaff waxed jacket isn't just a purchase, it's an investment. These jackets are designed and constructed to last decades, not seasons. We've seen customers wearing Belstaff jackets that are 20+ years old, still performing beautifully because they've been properly cared for.

Consider the economics: a £500-800 jacket that lasts 20 years with proper care costs you £25-40 per year. Compare that to replacing a £100 jacket every couple of years, and the value becomes clear. The key to achieving this longevity is regular, proper maintenance—and that starts with having the right products to hand.

What About Professional Services?

While home maintenance is perfectly suitable for regular upkeep, there are times when professional help is appropriate:

  • Deep cleaning of heavily soiled jackets
  • Repair of tears, broken zippers, or damaged hardware
  • Restoration of vintage or neglected jackets
  • If you're uncomfortable performing the work yourself

Belstaff offers professional cleaning and rewaxing services through their online repair portal, handled by their trusted partner ACS. If you're a Ragazzi customer and need guidance on professional services, we're always happy to advise.
