C.P. Company was founded in Bologna in 1971 by Massimo Osti, originally under the name Chester Perry (renamed in 1978 after trademark issues with Chester Barrie and Fred Perry). Osti was a graphic designer who pioneered garment dyeing, where fabrics are dyed after the garment is constructed rather than before.

The Mille Miglia goggle jacket came about in 1988 when C.P. Company sponsored the famous Italian vintage car race. Osti had been studying Japanese Civil Defence protective hoods and designed a jacket with integrated goggle lenses in the hood and a watch-viewer lens on the sleeve. That sleeve lens has since become the brand's signature detail across the full range, not just outerwear. Osti also founded Stone Island, so both brands share the same DNA.
