Karhu was founded in Helsinki, Finland, in 1916 under the name Ab Sportartiklar Oy, originally making skis, javelins and discuses from locally sourced birch before moving into running spikes. The company was renamed Karhu, Finnish for "bear", in 1920, and the bear has stayed part of the brand's identity ever since.
