Vans

Vans is a great contemporary shoe company selling a fantastic range of casual footwear and is a great addition to the Ragazzi Clothing range.
The company was started in 1966 by brothers Paul Van Doren and James Van Doren and partners.  It was originally called the Van Doren Rubber Company and they specialised in making shoes that could then be sold directly to the public, something that was rare at the time.  The company grew throughout the 1970s and gained a reputation for making quality footwear with contracts from the U.S  Air Force and the US Department of Defence.  The company’s popularity really started to grow when skateboarders starting wearing them all over southern California as they were fans of the shoe’s unique design.  A new design in 1975 led to the creation of the Vans ‘#95’ shoe which featured a non-slip bottom perfect for skateboarding.

Throughout the 1980s the company begun manufacturing a whole range of shoes for specific sports including BMX and wakeboarding and grew even further in popularity after they were worn by Sean Penn in the 1982 film Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Despite a number of financial problems the company came back bigger than ever by the 1990s and launched ‘Vans Customs’ allowing customers to design their own unique pair of Vans according to their preferences.

Vans continues to be popular among the skateboarding and BMX crowds but its footwear has crossed over to the mainstream producing wearable everyday styles in a range of colours perfect for casual wear.  Plimsoll shoes are a very current trend and our current Vans range features some great shoes which can be worn with jeans, shorts or chinos throughout the spring/summer season.
